Lydia from Deloitte
………….began her career as a receptionist in 1993 for an exclusive private members club. She worked her way up to Front Office Supervisor in charge of 18 staff, and met many a famous face along the way (unfortunately we couldn’t get her to spill the beans). She now supervisors 16 corporate receptionists in one of the worlds most prestigious accountancies.
What is the set up?
We have 8 reception areas, and I have 3 reception heads beneath me.
What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened on a reception?
Being asked to allow a dog to attend a seminar (this was not a guide dog – it was just for the dog’s education)
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you on reception?
It was at my previous company (not Deloittes!) but a client came through and she was flustered, rude and very late for a meeting, we calmly assisted her and during the silence while her badge was being printed off – the receptionist’s phone rang – and it was of a cow, mooing.
I bet that was awkward!
It was, there was a moment when she thought someone had made the noise about her! But then the receptionist took out her phone and she actually laughed – which was a relief…
What did you say to your receptionist?
There was little need to reprimand them - embarrassment more than sufficed!
How do you think reception services have changed over the years?
Corporate employers now also look for receptionists who have a hospitality / hotel background. Four or five years ago this would have been unheard of.
What’s your advice for those wishing to become managers?
You must be dedicated to your work and to your team, respected by colleagues and other departments. Hardworking, the best way to lead a team is by example. Willing to go the extra mile for the client/colleagues. Flexible to cover shifts and holidays. Able to multi-task, to manage your time, prepared to learn, and willing to take on board new tasks.
But most of all be happy and comfortable in your current role
What do you think makes yours the best reception areas.
We have lots of space. The eight reception areas are bright, airy and modern with adequate working space.
